18 The extensive and protracted Voyage of Her Majesty's Ship " Sulphur," having been produc-
19 tive of many new and valuable additions to Nalural History, a number of which arc of con-
20 siderable scientific interest, it has been determined to i)ublish them in a collected form, with
21 illustrations of such as are hitherto new or uniigured. The collection has been assembled
22 from a variety of countries, embraced within the limits of a voyage prosecuted along the
23 shores of North and South America, among the Islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans,
24 and in the circumnavigation of the globe. In many of these, no doubt, the industry
25 and research of previous navigators may have left no very prominent objects unobsened,
26 yet in others there ^\\\ for some time remain abundant scope for the Naturalist. Among
27 the countries \isited by the ** Sulphur,'* and which in the present state of science arc
28 inveslfM «ithmore particular interest, may be mentioned the Califoniias, Columbia River,
29 the Northwest coast of America, the Fetjee Group (a iM)rtion of ij^e Friendly Islands,)
30 New Zealand, New Ireland, New Guinea, China, and Madagascar.
31 Animated by a devotion to scienct*, the following gentlemen have liberally engaged to
32 undertake those departments with which each respr<ii\ely is best acquainted. The
33 Mammalia will thus t>e described by Mr. J. E. Gray; Birds by Mr. Gould; Fish, by Dr.
34 Richardson ; Crustacea, by Mr. Bell; Shells, by .Mr. Hinds; Radiata, by .Mr. J. E. Gray.

36 I. The work will extend to about Twelve Parts, one of which will appear on the Isl
37 of every third month.
38 II. The Parts will be publishe<l at the uniform price of Tvn •.9At7/tn^5, and it is in-
