3 of this amulet, within two or three days time (though I dare
4 not suppose there was any connection between the medicine
5 and the disease), she first drank a little water, then warm
6 broths in small quantities at a time, and nothing else till Palm-
7 Sunday again, twelve months after, when she began to eat
8 bread and other food as she had formerly done ; and the
9 record states that she was then about the age of sixty, and
10 still living in the same place, ready to testify to the truth of
11 the matter ; as were also Thomas White and his wife, who were
12 the only other persons living in the house with her, and who
13 would confidently assert (for they carefully observed), that
14 they did not believe she ever took anything whatever in those
15 ten weeks time, nor anything more than what is before men-
16 tioned until the expiration of the year.”
17 The London Medical and Physical Journal, Vol. XXXV.,
18 p. 509, states that: —
19 “An account of the sleeping woman of Dunnibald, near
20 Montrose, was read by the Rev. James Brewster, at the Royal
21 Society of Edinburgh. Her first sleeping fit lasted from the
22 27th to the 30th of June, 1815. Next morning she again
23 fell into a sleep which lasted seven days, without motion,
24 food, or evacuation. At the end of this time, by moving
25 her hand and pointing to her mouth, it w'as understood she
26 wanted food, which Was given to her; but she remained in
27 her lethargic state till the 8th of August, six weeks in all,
28 without appearing to be awake, except on the 30th of June,”
29 &c., &c. This case is well authenticated.
30 And in J. N. Willan’s Miscellaneous Works, published
31 by A. Smith, M.D., p. 339, he states that he had seen
32 many, mostly Jews and other aliens, of a dark, swarthy
33 complexion, sometimes lie six or eight weeks in the torpid
34 insensible condition above described.
