four drachms, should be made into
a candle and lighted, and burnt be-
neath the navel, until one-third is
consumed. The result may prove
more satisfactory if combustion is
carried on within a funnel-shaped
instrument. It is said to produce
purging. The patient must, of
course, lie on his stomach, and be
placed on a bed, perforated, so as to

Electricit., v. Galvanism.
* Galvanism., I have already alluded to
the importance of this agent in the
first volume, page 145. I will only
add, that galvanic baths may, per-
haps, be useful in this disease. The
patient being placed in a warm bath,
the conductor of one of the poles is
applied to a part of the body under
water, whilst that of the other is
brought into contact with some
other part not immersed.
If a favourable effect is not soon
apparent, it may be worth while to
reverse the poles. We must not,
however, persist in the attempt to
cure by magnetism only, but use
internal medicines also.
