6 Of late years I used, often with
7 success, a simple resinous adhesive
8 cerate in hydrocele and ascites.
9 Afer tapping, I applied it on the re-
10 laxed part, fastening it by a band-
11 age ; using at the same time the in-
12 ternal remedies.
13 For those who prefer compound
14 remedies, I add here two recipes
15 of my former practice, noted in my
16 manual as beneficial in dropsy.
17 The one consists of Calomel , Digit,
18 p., Opium , extr. Squill ce m., in equal
19 parts, prepared as two-grain pills.
20 The dose was one to two pills every
21 morning and evening.
22 The second recipe consists in
23 essences of Jalapa, Senna, Turpe-
24 thum, Scammonium, Ipom. ccer., and
25 Myrobal. nig., mixed, they are eva-
26 porated over a gentle fire to a soft
27 extract ; to which is added, so much
28 of a mixture of one part of calomel
29 and two parts of rhubarb, sufficient
30 to form it into a mass, from which
31 three-grain pills are prepared. One
32 pill administered every morning and
33 evening, effected in eight days the
34 cure of an anasarca, by increasing
35 the discharge of urine. Like most
36 physicians still do, I also formerly
37 treated my patients after the prin-
38 ciple : Via unita fortior, believing
39 that it is necessary at once to attack
40 all the organs, for removing such
41 intractable (?) diseases.
