3 Indigof. Anil herba (I.) Inflammation of the liver.
4 Indigofera linifolia — vegetates in the lower mountains of
5 the Punjab. There, the root of this plant, is said to be officinal and
6 to be used in febrile eruptions. It is Dealsing's root for Torkee.
7 Indigof. linifol. radix (I.) Salivation. Thoracic pain.
8 Indigum. Pigmentum Indicum — is a well-known blue color-
9 ing matter from India. See Vol. I. p. 72. Indigo is sometimes
10 used externally, by the natives, but, internally very seldom.
11 In European medicine, it is considered as a sub-astringent ; is
12 administered sometimes in diarrhoea, and forms an ingredient in
13 nervine baths. Indigo is used in Epilepsy : the following
14 curious manner of employing it is practised in the Islands of the
15 Grecian Archipelago: — Epileptics, during the fits, are wrapped
16 in linen, recently dipped in a solution of Indigo, and then covered
17 up warm in bed, so as to promote sweating. Might not this
18 mode of stimulating perspiration be useful in paralysis, dropsy,
19 cholera, rheumatic pains, etc. ?
20 Indigum (II.) Quinsey. Thoracic pain.
21 Indig o-nitrici acidum (III.)
22 * Inula Helenium — is not officinal at Lahore. Arabian
23 writers recommend the elecampane-root as an expectorant in
24 accumulations of mucus on the chest, and as a resolvent in in-
25 durations. The root I used, was procured from Agra.
26 Inula Hel. radix (I.)
27 Inula Royleana (/. Helenii aff.) — grows in the Cashme-
28 rean hills ; but, as the plant is considered poisonous, it is not
29 used. I am of opinion, that important virtues lie hidden in it,
30 and that it is well worthy of being experimented with.
31 Inula viscosa & graveolens — have been lately recommended
32 as diuretics, useful in calculous diseases.
33 Iodinum — is unknown to the Eastern doctors, as it is but a late
34 invention of European scientific men. It is indeed, one of the most
35 important articles in arts and medicine, and new discoveries of its
36 utility are made almost daily. It has recently been recommended
