2 with an equal portion of proof-spirit ; the mixture is then well
3 shaken, for five minutes, and allowed to settle ; afterwards, the
4 limpid part is poured off* and preserved in a well-closed bottle,
5 which is put into a box, and carefully kept from the light.
6 Leporin. (II.) Expectoration of blood. Shifting pains.
7 Lepus timidus — may be found all over Hindostan and the
8 Punjab; but, in Cashmere, no hare has been seen. I purpose
9 taking some thither, to see if the climate will agree with their
10 nature. The hare of Hindostan is of small size. To this
11 animal the Hakims ascribe a great many medicinal virtues; they
12 use its rennet, bile, blood, hair, skin, teeth, and excrement.
13 The rennet ( coagulum leporis) they consider useful in epilepsy,
14 haemorrhages, spitting of blood, disorders of the catamenia
15 (monthly courses) and bites of serpents. They preserve the
16 blood dried on cotton ; when wanted, it is put into water, for a
17 few minutes, then stirred up and drunk ; this mode of adminis-
18 tration is specially recommended in asthma.

20 Leucas cephalotes — is an officinal plant at Lahore.
21 Leuc. ceph. herba (I.) Dry mouth. Vomiting.
22 Levisticum, v. Ligusticum.
23 Lichen Islandicus. Cetraria Islandica — is not officinal at
24 Lahore. I procured some from Agra. The bitter principle of
25 Iceland-moss, is cetrarin , which can be separated by a very small
26 quantity of lime, or carbonate of potash.

28 Ltchen odorifeuus. Borrera asneh , Boyle — is, I suppose,
29 a product of the Himalayas. It is officinal at Lahore. The
30 Hakims administer it in disorders of the stomach, dyspepsia,
31 vomiting, pain in the liver or womb, induration in the uterus,
32 amenorrhcea, calculi, and nocturnal spermatic discharges.

34 Salivation or ptyalism. Soreness of the throat.
35 Toothache from caries or rheumatism.
