1 Verbasci Cashm. radios (I.) Diarrhoea. Difficulty of
2 hearing. Headache with Giddiness. Pain in the
3 umbilical region. Pain of the shoulders. Soreness
4 of the throat. Thoracic pain with offensive expec-
5 toration.
6 ♦Verbena officinalis — grows at Lahore and in Cashmere,
7 as well as in Europe ; but it is very seldom used there ; and, if
8 I mistake not, but seldom in Europe. Vervain was formerly
9 administered in jaundice, dysentery, gout, ague, calculi, chronic
10 cough, affections of the throat, ulcers, ophthalmia, wounds, etc.
11 That the pulverized root, worn as an amulet, cured a chronic
12 headache, may appear preposterous to doctors of our age ; they
13 scarcely can, perhaps, will not believe it ; and what will they
14 say, when I add the result of my experience in corroboration of
15 this wonder ? They are at liberty to say, that I am mistaken ;
16 but let them test it, and I am persuaded they will soon be con-
17 vinced of the truth of my statement. It cannot be denied, that
18 the fame of this efficacious plant rendered it a symbol of peace,
19 in time of war, and an ornament to the altars at which the ancients
20 sacrificed. Besides the many other properties I discovered in
21 this plant (when administered in continued small doses) it is an
22 antisyphilitic ; so that verbena may be called Veneris Vena.
23 That the ancients knew not its virtues in venereal diseases, is,
24 probably, owing to their ignorance of this destructive malady.
25 I used both the leaves and the seeds, and proved them to be effi-
26 cacious; it may be, that in strong doses the effect is widely
27 different. The root I have not tried ; nor yet the Cashmerean
28 plant.

31 pain. Toothache from caries.

35 ♦Veronica Beccabunga — is officinal in Cashmere, where it
36 grows in the valley.
