2A like sense of obligation to the Court of

3Directors collectively, as well as to many of its

4individual members, was warmly cherished by the

5principal person engaged in the enterprise here

6described ; and had Mr. Moorcroft survived to have

7been the narrator of his own travels, I doubt not

8that he would have availed himself of the same

9opportunity to have given utterance to similar

10feelings.

11But I am further induced to inscribe these

12pages to your Honourable Court, by the per-

13suasion^ that at no period of its existence as a

14public body, did it comprise a larger proportion

15of members competent to take a sound and en-

16lightened view of the true interests of British

17India and of the countries on its confines; and

18disposed to encourage every judicious eflfort of the

19Company's servants to acquire an accurate know-

20ledge of the nations around them, to establish

21and maintain a friendly intercourse with whom

22will not only promote the commercial and poli-

23tictii prosperity of Great Britain and her Indian
