26. By the list of troes and buddings in the nursery it will at once be seen what
great progress has been made. Thero are now 258 imported fruit trees, all doing well,
1,195 grafts and buddings from imported stock, and 22,584 wild and seedling stocks,
which arc being budded and grafted as soon as they become fit. Of ornamental timber
and fuel trecs there are 165,187 in the nurseries, besides thousands of Australian
gums and acacias, which wore just appearing above the ground when I was at Ranee-
khet atthe end of June. The deodar scad which was sown in the 70 acres of aban-
doned tea garden came up very thickly in tho spring, but the great heat during May
and June killed a good many of the young seedlings, and it is impossible to say at
present whether sufficient escaped to cover the ground with forest. I went ovor the
place in June, and am inclined to think that, with a little transplanting next rains,
quite enough are still alive.

27. In February last about 300 gum-tree secdlings were taken from the Ranee-
khet nursery and planted at Mohahn (12 miles north of Ramnugger and on the
Kosie River). By the end of June these little trees had grown from four inches to six
