380. In Burma, operations have heen confined to clearing
the river-ways for floating timber. In the Tharawaddi Divi-
sion, 45,800 cubic feet of stone have been blasted during the past
year for the purpose of clearing the channels of the rocks by
which the timber is impeded in its passage down from the forests.
Information is being eollected as to the position and size of the
obstructions: which still remain to be cleared away, and a full
report on the subject will shortly be submitted.
81. Inthe Berar Forests two lines of road have heen
opened out for the export of timber; one of 14 miles in length
from the Maijlehat Forest to Chicalda, to facilitate the carriave of
timber to the Elichpur markets, whence the upper portion ,of the
Purna valley is supplicd; the other 6 miles in length, which runs
down the Tapti valley towards the large city of Bohranpur.
These will be of great advantage to the timber trade, by which
the districts of Berar, Lower Nimar, and Upper Khandesh
are supplied with bamboos, teak-poles, and other forest produce.
Further development of the means of timber export to these
forests is most desirable, and the necessity of early attention te
this point has been impressed on the Forest Officarg of the
province.
