164. The longer thinning is neglected the more difficult it becomes, and
Ruowinige required for requires greater knowledge and greater care for its success-
thinning ; Work shouldbe ful application. A ‘“ young thicket” of conifers, 2. e., from
etre ar edeartine up to 10 or 15 years, 18 comparatively easy. A
‘‘ grown thicket ” (“ stangen-ort,” German), 15 to 50 or 60 years, is much more
ditfticult.
165. In road-making (about which I have before remarked) some progress
has been made. The road between Barmaor and Lamu
saat has been continued, and will be completed next year,
costing Rs. 800 per mile, which is cheap, considering the difficulty of the locality,—
the main bridge on this line being made by the Chamba State.
166. A road from Barmaor to Harsar was commenced (from Harsar end),
and two miles made; also a road upward from Lamt towards Bara-Banso for
four miles,—both are made by begadri labor, as the State will be largely benefited
by the roads.
167. The following planting work (all deodar) was done:—Two-and-a-half
pints acres near Lamti at Choli,—thus, in continuation of a plot
begun in 1868 on a piece of level ground, 10 acres in extent,
close to the river.
ae 168. A place for a plantation of 25 acres was formed
and fenced at Siurdé, near Barmaor, but only a few plants
put in: the result not known.*
169. A plantation of 50 acres, on a slope below the forest at Bassu, was
ae fenced in, and partly planted (above 10 acres) with natural
u. ° e
seedlings, having more than 50 per cent. success.
_ Restoration of cut-out 170. The following portions of exhausted or cut out
orests.
forests were enclosed, viz:—
44 acres at Gudr{i near Ldémi, all ce debris” being removed, the
a fenced, and the soil loosened, and seeds dibbled in in Novem-
er. This had no great success, as seed was bad.
233 acres at Sdeti, near Barnota, were treated in the same way
with success.
The old 83 acres’ plantation at Saniwdl was re-fenced.
171. Lower Rdvi—The only forests in this division are Baklo, Kdldtop,
Work of Lowor Ravi and Kaintli. The river itself has not had any work in
Division. blasting or improvement effected; the construction of the
ee Bari Doab Canal weir, built on a plan which not only
interferes with the timber traffic, but renders damage to
the works in case of a rush of timber ina high flood proba-
Canal weir, ble. A separate reference has been made on the subject.
172. The Kdldtop Forest.—The surveys, observations, and, indeed, the entire
Kélitop. working plan was practically completed. Mr. Sanderson,
Mr. Sanderton’s work on 2 trained planter, was in subordinate charge, and effected a
nuracrios, &c. good deal of work in thinning young compartments, and in
laying out and fencing thrce nurseries, besides planting out a
number of trees and making an experimental plot by
partly clearing the brushwood, leaving convenient clumps of it (it is a large
shrubby /abiate) for shade, and putting out deodar seedlings under the shade. A
Rain of 187). full account of the nurseries is in the Conference Report of
1871-72, page 35. ‘The excessive rain of 1871, however,
caused the failure of a large portion. In “Nursery G.,” which was high and
exposed, all seedlings died. Such a place would not have been attempted, but
it was a piece of bought-out cultivation, and it was unseemly to have the great
blank. The soil is too raw, and by the treatment since adopted I hope yet to
succeed : seedlings once raised will be extremely hardy.
