2 gress Report of Forests in Oudh, for the year 1871-1872.
3 In the Report of last year the Financial Results exhibited a deficit
4 of Rs. 39,810; thus :—

8 And the Government of India in their orders upon this Report (No. 14,
9 dated 4th January 1872), commented upon these results as financially
10 unsatisfactory.
11 2. During the year under review an improvement in this respect
12 is noted, the results of the year’s operations showing an actual surplus
13 of Rs. 11,086; thus :—

17 And if the difference between assets and liabilities at
18 commencement and close of year be added, Rs. 6,991
19 The total surplus would be, Rs. 18,077
20 3. The estimate for the year as modified by Government was as
21 follows :—

25 In comparing the estimate with the results, it will be seen that there
26 was a diminution in both Estimated Receipts and Expenditure, but the
27 deficicncy preponderating in the former, resulted in a decreased surplus.
28 4. It is noted with regret that, unlike the Gonda and Bharaich
29 Divisions, the Kheri Forests suffered much from the ravages of jungle
30 fire. The subject should continue to occupy the attention of the Con-
31 scrvator, who should devise such measures as may ensure the preservation
32 of selected blocks of forests from destruction.
33 5. Tho result of the experimental enclosure of a small patch of
34 forest in the Bharaich Division for sl seedlings 1s noted as satisfactorily
35 proving the necessity for the exclusion of cattle, wherever forest blocks
36 are reserved for natural reproduction.
