as it exists at present it is impossible to exercise efficient control over the felling
operations of persons obtaining permits, and a change must be effected before next
opon season. At present the demand, though a growing one, is not so large as
materially to affect the forests if felling is confined to the areas most capable of
bearing it.

‘‘ I feel no hesitation in saying that the increase in growth is very consider.
able, that there is perceptible increase of soil in positions where previ-
ously the rock was much exposed, and that springs appear to flow with
more steadiness to a later date, if not all through the year, and most
sorts of trees regenerate themselves extensively; but comparatively there
is not a similar proportion of teak growing from seed, though the quan-
tity of shoots growing from old stocks has increased ta an extent fully
proportionate with the most sanguine expectations,”

During this — season arrangements were made for
keeping out fires from Sigrampur and Bijeraghogarh. Inthe former the measure
had been successful up to the close of the official year, but owing to full effect
not having been given to the Divisional Officer’s instructions, fire crossed the
boundary and spread over part of one block in Bijeraghogarh —_It was not possible
to arrange for the protection of Burala from fire this seasaqn.
48. Fire has now been excluded from the Bori forest for the seventh
pees year. Regarding the results thus attained, [ will give
here the following extract from Mr. Home's report :—
“ Any one walking through the forest cannot fail to notico the difference in
the trees inside and outside the boundary, as also of the grasses, which
must have utterly changed since fire was excluded, if they ever were, as
it 18 only reasonable to suppose, of the same description as the parched
and dried up specimens found within a mile or two outside the forest
