119. Ina financial point the results attained in the State forests during
the year under report have not been satisfactory, but I think that this is more
than compensated for by the advance made in the conservation of the forests ;
and considering the changes that have taken place in the controlling establish-
ment the work accomplished does not fall far short of what might be expected.
120. The sketch maps referred to in Section IV. of the First Part of this
report will form accompaniments to the State forest registers.
121. In conclusion, I would record my acknowledgment of the pood
service done by Mr. Jacob in the Northern Division to which charge he re-
verted on being relieved by me, in June last. He has had much up-hill work
in restoring order both in the forests and the Divisional office. Of the other officers,
Messrs. Thompson, Home, and McKee have done best ; Mr. Home, notwithstand-
ing ill health, from which he has suffered since the commencement of the open
scason, has displayed energy and ability in the discharge of the heavy
<dluties connected with theWestern Division. During last hot season Mr. MeKee
«lid good service in the Centra] Division, the work of which he hag since con-~
ducted in addition to his duties connected with the Forest accounts for nearly
tive months. The District reports will ] believe be reviewed separately by the
Commissioners of Division, by whom the exertions of individual officers will
doubtless be noticed, but | cannot close this section without tendering my acknow-
ledyments to District officers generally for the assistance and support they
have rendered to my Department.
1 have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant,
J. C. DOVETON,
Conservator of Forests,
Central Provinces.
