81. The results of the first of these operations in which Messrs. Stratford
and Ifough were almost wholly employed have furnished very important
data shewing that, although greatly injured by ¢oungya cultivation as far as
their resources in ‘Teak are concerned, the lower hills in the Shoaylay com-
prise enormous areas abounding in cutch and suitable for reservation.
82. Valuation surveys of Mr. Stratford over an area of 1087'8 acres,
Mr. Hough over 1326°2 acres and Forest Ranger Moung Way over 1114°7 acres,
or a total area of 3528°2 acres, give the following number of trees on 100 acres.

83. Therichest teak Tracts examined would appear to be on the Satthar
and Kyctchee Kadin Choungs and at the sources of the Padetmyoung and
North Kyee Byoo choungs ; asmall Tract is also immediately North of the
Padetmyoung Reserved Tract. Elsewhere the teak occurs in scattered patches
surrounded by large areas brought under fowngya cultivation. ‘This is particu-
larly the case North of the Shoaylay stream and between the Shorbyoo and
Shaboung streams.
84. The second of the cpcrations of tle season was delegated to Mr.
Hough and found to confirm the opinion already entertained regarding the ex-
cellent resources of this large Tract and the expediency for its reservation.
Valuation surveys over an area of 209 acres gave the following results cal-
culated for 100 acres.
ree elena Cutch. Kokoh. Pynkadoe, Pymma.
Average........ 893 270 3 672 98
No permanent cultivation whatever is practised within this hilly block, and
even doungya cultivation appears to have received a check by the formation of
Reserved Tracts around it.
85. The third and last of the season’s operations occupied Forest Ranger
Moung Way to a very late date, and combined both a valuation and topogra-
me survey of many of the Tracts inthe vicinity of the towngya grounds of
the Karens.
Until full details are entered in the maps in course of compilation the ex-
act results of the work cannot be well ascertained. But they may nevertheless
be said to bear out the opinion generally entertained that some difficulty will
be experienced in apportioning the lands for toungya cultivation as the Karens
are numerous and prefer, in almost every instance, to spread out their cultiva-
tion along the alluvial banks of the streams, large and small.
86. Salween Division. As the work in this division had reference spcci-
ally to Teak Tracts selected for reservation it appears unnecessary here to note
more than the actual results of the valuation surveys.
