_ _ Madras coolies will not take service except for several months consecu-
tively ; hence the plantation officer on such occasions has to depend upon
whatever local daily labor can be procured within a radius of 10 to 20 miles of
the plantation.
103. Results both at’ Kyekpyoogan and the Sittang plantation of 1870
(296 acres), shew conclusively that labor is not yet so abundant as to promise
the successful cultivation of a very large area with Teak in one place, unless
the greater part of itcan be made over to hired cultivators.
104. Two weedings have taken place in this plantation and the blank
portions are being restocked.
105. When recently examined by the Conservator the plants everywhere
indicated vigorous growth.
The Conservator has however to notice that in extending the area under
cultivation the plantation officer had included certain slopes at the Southern
extremity which should have been avoided on account of poverty of soil.
_ 106. Cost, The expenditure incurred in the formation of this plantation
viz. for direet labor, hired cultivators, huts, repairs of buildings, tools and
capitation tax of cultivators amounts to Rs. 13,233-10 or Rs. 37-2 per acre.

2,111-3 or Rs.‘5-14-10 per acre, experimental cultivation Rs. 216-9, survey and
demarcation 96-11,—making a total of Rs. 43 per acre.

108. Plantation of 1870; (147°25 acres.) This plantation has received two
thorough weedings ; fires have been excluded, and a crop of toorie raised
between the teak plants.
The expenditure including proportion of cost of cooly huts; of clearing
paths, etc., amounted to Rs. 4,869-1 or Rs. 33 per acre subject toa small
deduction on account of 53 baskets toorie which realized Rs. 53: a much
smaller sum than was anticipated.
The plantation officer had overlooked the fact that the demand at Rangoon
is limited to broken ¢oorie propane especially for sale, and that the rough grain
is almost unknown in the market.
109. An equal number of measurements taken in four different parts of
this plantation in June last, gave the following results.
