135. Pyoonchoung Plantation of 1868; (120 acres). The 11 detached
blocks comprising this plantation present great diversity in growth and num-
ber of trees with which they are stocked.
The 2 blocks on the West bank of the Pyoonchoung indicate the best
erowth, but comprise within their areas large blanks or patches exhibiting ex-
ceedingly poor growth, the result probably of imperfect weeding arrange-
ments when the plants were young.

137. The size and shape of these trees as well as the fresh green leaves on
them, as late in the season as March, testified to the benefit derived from inter-
mixture with plantain trees but as these latter will not thrive except on rich,
deep, alluvial soil, which is not always obtainable for teak plantations, the expe-
riment here noted has no practical bearing upon the question of cultivating teak
with other species.
