Two packets of succirubra and 1} packets of condaminia seed recently
received from Darjeeling are reported as germinating freely.
148. The experiments made with Eucalyptus seed have altogether failed.
149. Plumadoe of Decemher 1868, altitude 2,100 feet. More failures
have occured among the trees (Cinchona succirubra) on the lower site selected
by Mr. Kurz. The total number in existence is
UppeF ( 88 trees from 4 feet to 13 feet in height
site. / 74 plants (from cuttings of 1871), 10 to 12 inches in height.
Lower 30 trecs, many sickly,
site. (48 plants (from cuttings of 1871), 10 to 12 inches in height.
The growth and condition of the trees in the upper site appear very satis-
factory : this is also borne out by the fact that 6 of them have flowered and yield-
ed 24 tolas weight of good seed.
150. Bogalay; altitude 2800 feet. The two trees placed here in 1866,
are reported as thriving: the yearly measurement of them appears to have been
overlooked.
151. Establishment. The strength of the Cinchona establishment is as
follows:—
1 Trained Assistant on Rupees 40 per mensem.

struction, on Rs 9. > ‘ :
4. Peons on Ra. 10..........00cceoee 40 ,, .
Total Rs. 98 _,,
It has been found necessary to increase the salary of the trained Assistant
on a covenant to serve Government for not less than 5 years.
152. Expenditure. During the year under review the total expenditure
incurred in Cinchona cultivation amounted to Rs. 1,834-12-7.
153. No additional communications have been received from Mr. Brough-
ton, Quinologist to Government, Madras, with regard to the preparation of
Cinchona bark as a febrifuge. It is therefore assumed that an acid extract of
it is all that is possible of adoption on the part of the people of the Forest dis-
tricts.
5. Y1eLp AND WoRKING OF TIIE FORESTS.

155. These figures exhibit a fair annual outturn: the yield of 1870-71
being unusually high, that of the year under review shews a decrease of about
4,900 tons. It is however 12,200 tons in excess of the outturn for 1869-70.
