This falling off, it will be seen, is attributable chiefly to a large decrease in
the Salween Division, consequent mainly on a diminished outturn from the
Thoungyeen Forest, as anticipated in Forest Administration Report for 1867-68,
and from the Upper Salween Forests, owing to the Permit for II Division
having been cancelled, and the Permit Holders of the other Divisions being
averse to attempting the extraction of a large quantity of tinfber in the last
year of their Permits.
163. But little timber was also extracted from the Yoonzaleen District;
all seasoned timber having been removed, and the trees recently girdled not
having stood their full time.
The small demand for II class timber at Maulmain occasioned also a reduc-
tion in the outturn of the Attaran Forests and the entire suspension of work in
the Doomdamee and lower Salween Forests.
164. A small decrease also took place in the Sittang and Prome Divisions
by the outturn falling to its normal level.
165. Revision of rates on Permit timber. The new system of assessment,
sanctioned by Government in 1870, has been enforced in the case of timber from
the following Forest Districts, and found to involve an average increase of
Rs, 1-4-10 per log over the receipts under the old system of assessment.
Stitang Division.
166. The number of elephants employed by the Permit Holders in the
Sittang Division is reported to be inall 210. According to latest information
received, no less than 26 of these animals, or 12°3 per cent, had been carried off
by the epidemic notod in para 160.
