2 172. In addition to the Foreign timber imported by the Salween, the
3 following timber was also reported for duty at the Kadoe Revenue Station
4 during the year :—
5 From Foresta within British territory, 10,382 logs ; or 9,551°4 tons.
6 thereby making the total quantity reported for duty at Kadoe up to 98,799 logs.
7 173. The number of logs which were cleared on payment of duty during
8 tho year was 74,399, or 3,231 in excess of the figure in 1870-71, leaving a
9 balance of 55,826 logs on hand at the Kadoe depdt at the close of the official
10 year. This large balance is the result of the increased importation of timber
11 during the year, and the unusually large quantity on hand at the close of the
12 previous year.
13 174, Mr. Slym reports also that a fallin the Bombay and Madras mar:
14 kets affected the clearing of timber very considerably at the time, but that sub-
15 sequently, the tone of the markets improved ; and of the large balance in hand,
16 as much as 34,101 logs represent timber sold.
17 Of the balance unsold Mr. Slym estimates only one-third as marketable,
18 the remainder being of inferior quality.
19 175. The past year on the whole, may be considered as a prosperopys onc
20 for the exporters of teak timber from Maulmain, owing to increased shipments
21 and the lower prices at which timber was obtained in the local market.
22 Many of the importers on the other hand have incurred heavy losses, the re-
23 sult of which will be that the customary, exorbitant prices can no longer be
24 offered for timber in the Foreign States.
25 A. sign of improvement in the trade is the export to the Europe markets of
26 sawn teak timber to tho extent of 80 tons.
