CONSERVATOR’S REPORT.
Annual Report No. 951, dated 9th July 1872, on the Management and Conservancy of the
Mysore Forests for the Financial year 1871—72, ly Capra G. J. van SomenEn,
Conservator.
I have the honor {o submit for the information of the Chief Commissioner, the Pro-
gress Report of Forest Administration in Mysore for the year 1871—72.
INTRODUCTORY.
2. Forest Legislation.— Revised Rules for the sale of sandal-wood by auction were
introduced during the ycar, and brought into force at the annual auctions.
SPECIAL.
HEAD 1.—STATE FORESTS.
FIRST SECTION.
3. Under this section I shall include only the addilions actually made to State-
forests. In tho Nandidroog Range large extents of land were set off, and portions of
them demarcated as fucl reserves. Though they are thus actually closed to the public,
they do not properly come under the head of State-fores(s. In the Hassan District several
forests were inspected and set off, but will now be worked under the District Forest
scheme. The work done here, and that done in setting off cardamom } lots, will be shewn
under the fourth section “ Improvement and Extension of Forests.”

Report for 1869—70, ‘The sottlement of the K.indal Forest in Toomkoor, (para 6 of
Report for 1870—71) was not taken in hand. The setting off of fuel blocks and forests
nearer Bangalore, and along the line of the then contemplated railway bomg more
important work.
5. The actual addition therefore to State-forests during the year is not large, as
the comparative statement will shew. The introduction of the District Forest scheme will,
if succossful, put 9 limit to any further extensicn of State-forests, as the new scheme is
more elastic, and if properly carried out, will socure the due conservancy and repreduc-
tion of existing forests without resort to the extreme measure of absolutely closing them
to all.
