75. One Ranger in Kolar was dismissed for drunkenness and irregularity of conduct.
The other subordinates are on the whole favorably reported on by their superior officers.
76. I last year gave the receipts and issues of letters, bath English and vernacu-
lar, in my office. They were receipts 3,137, issues 2,698, This year the number ig still
higher having risen to—
Receipts. Issues.
English. : : 2,745 2,585
Kanarese : : 1,356 1,355
Total. 4,101 3,940
77. The office work has nocessarily increased as the Department has enlarged.
When Major Hunter was Conservator the receipts were 893 and issues 1,190. This large
addition to my writing, and the inspection and check of the far larger number of returns
and accounts now sent in, is very harrassing, and is, 1 think, unduly heavy, when it is
remembered that my work takes me out constantly away from my office and writers. The
arrears to be got through after such occasions are unavoidable, but are productive of
much inconvenience and some annoyance both to myself and others.
I have the honor to be
SIR,
Your most obedient Servant,
G. J. van SOMEREN, Captain,
Conservator of Forests, Mysore & Coorg.
