GENERAL REMARKS.
CoNTEMPLATED OPERATIONS,
26. These will bo limited to the felling of—
I. Teak, about as vis 14,000 cubic feet,
II. Jungle wood “a 12,000 ”
III. Sandalwood 50 tons;—and will include the extension of the teak-
plantations of Karmad and Kutampole, and the ostablishment of a now one, as an
experiment, in East Coorg; the planting upof the sandal-reserve at Waddar Ane,
and the completion, if possible, of the demarcation of the State-forests.
27. Tho selection of suitable spots for the ostablishment of sandal plantations in
the State-forests, should also bo systematically carried out, the gradual planting up of
such spots being taken in hand without delay.
It is hoped that the next report will shew that somothing definite has been done
in this direction.
28. The prococding of Captain Taylor, described in para 40 of the report, was
highly reprehensible. It is hard to believe that a gentleman in his position, and of his
antecedents, would be a party to such conduct.
29. The substitution of an active and intelligent officor, Mr. Ring, in the post of
Assistant Conservator, for Mr. Hunter, whose neglect has been tho subject of grave
comment in previous reports, has already produced fair results; and I cordially share
the Vonservator’s expectation, that the progress and interests of the Forest Department
in Coorg will, in all respects, benefit by this change.
30. Tho subject of the inefficiency of the Assistant Conservator’s office establish-
ment should, if necessary, be brought forward separately, the pages of an Annual
Report not being the proper place for introducing such matters.
31 The removal from the outstanding balance of the amounts forged by the late
Mr. Coates has, it is understood, been sanctioned since tke report was drafted.
