number of trees put down, and I do not think the extent is actually more than 30 acres,
I had hoped that all the plantations would have been surveyed in 1871—72 by the
Revenue Survey Officer, but he was unable after all to detail a party. I therefore give
tho areas of these plantations with some diffidence. They will all be surveyed during the
the current year, and the results reported separately. A fresh clearing of 40 acres for
the plantings of 1872—73 was made, and will be planted up this year. When done, the
computed arca of the place will be 213 acres, at a total cost since the commencement of
operations in 1867—68 of Rs. 8,011; out of which Rs. 2,604 were spent last year. I
inspected this plantation in December last, It was then looking well, excepting one
part, the plantings of 1870—71, which had been carelessly weeded. A small part of
this was also destroyed by fire, The Mutsaddi in charge allowed the coolies to go
to the Bazar when the jungle in the vicinity was on fire, and owing to but a small
numbor of men being left behind, the flames crossed the fire path, but fortunately did
little damage. The man was removed trom his post. Now that wo havo been regularly
working here for some years, the difficulty in obtaining labor is considerably lessened.
Coolics now come to us, and lincs have been built in the enclosure.
KouTramMpoLE PLANTATION.
This teak plantation is doing well. Its situation is in some points all that can be
desired. It is on the road-side, only 35 miles from Cannanore by road, and is near the
Baropole down which wood can be floated. The climate is well suited to the growth
of teak, and the soil mch; but the place is very unhealthy, and it is difficult to obtain
labor. About 30 acres were planted up in 1871—72, and a contract given for the felling
of 50 acres for the plantingsof 1872—73. The contractor worked well, and got through
half his work. Sickness then set in, coolies died and left, and since the commencement of
this year, the contractor has died himself, and work has stopped. Mysore men are quite
unable to withstand the climato, and the work is carried on almost entirely by Western
Coast men, ‘Iho computed area of this plantation is now 166 acres, and a total expendi-
ture since 1868—69 has beon incurred of Rs. 4,180, of which Rs. 1,467 were spent in
the year under report. Weeding isa heavy item in both Karmad and Kutampole,
and in tho latter place clearing and burning is expensive work. I wason my way to
inspect this plantation, but was stopped by sickness and compelled to turn back.
21. Sandal Reserves —At Wuddir Anein Kiggatnid, 80 seers of sandal seed were
sown in 70,800 pits, and, where protected by natural shade, tho young seedlings are
domg well. A large proportion of the sced germinated and the work will be pushed on
this year. The pits were mide’one foot square and six inches deep, and the seed sown
inthem. Jn this work and in enclosing a part of the reserve, Rs. 220 were spent. When
our State Forests are set off, portions of them will be utilized as sandal reserves, the soil
being fitted for the purpose.
22. Fuel Rescrves—I have already stated, sce para 9, that the question of a Fuel
Plantation for Mercara is being mooted, and no fuel reserves have been commenced
any where.
