METHOD OF DISPOSING OF TIMBER AND SANDALWOOD.
30. This is the same as in Mysore. Timber yards are in chargo of Mutsaddis who
keep books in which the numbors and cubical contents of each log are cktered. <A sale
book shewing these particulars, with columns added to shew the selling pricéaand names
of purchasers, is also kept, and the auctions are always presided over by the Officer in
charge of the Range. Twenty five per cent of the sum total due, is paid on the'day of sale,
and the balance falls due withm 30 days. No wood is removed till paid for itfall and
a passport been obtained.
Sandalwood is sold by weight, and mula'ts mutandis wnder the same regulations ;
the period of credit allowed is however 90 days. Unfortunately the Fraserpéte koti is
not under the charge of a Dardga. It is supervised by the senior Sandal Manégar.
This plan has disadvantages, and as Ido not see any hkehhood of a Dardga beng
allowed, I intend as soon as the new Timber Depot Mutsaddi is appointed, to put him also
in charge of the sandal kdéti at the same place.
31. Lunes of Export.—All timber, with the exception of poon spars and wild jack,
goes eastwards to Mysore, either along the mam roads or by cross country roads te the
Hassan District. All sandalwood goes to the west and by native craft to Bombay.
DISTRICT FORESTS.
32. Thore are none in Coorg. When the forests shall have been set off, there
will be only State forests, village forests and private holdings, in which latter I include
all jamma and bine holdings, and land planted with coffee.
