I wave the honor to submit the annual Forest Report of the Hyderabad
Assigned Districts for the year 1871-72.
INTRODUCTORY REMARKS.
2. The statistical data of the province were referred to in detail in the Report
for 1870-71, and there is nothing therefore to record
under this head, except the new measures and
changes that have been effected during the year.
Statistical data
8. A sketch map of Berar is appended, which, on comparison with the map
attached to the Report for 1870-71, will show the
changes that have a place with reference to State
Forests. In this map, State Forests are painted green, the Oomrawuttee fuel
reserve yellow, whilst the bazars or nakas at the foot of the Mailghat and Adjunta
lulls for taxation of forest produce are represented by a black point enclosed in a
circle of red.
Fixplanation of Maps.
4. In the Malghat, the Katkali tract, which it was formerly proposed to form
into a State Reserve, has been abandoned, it having
been decided to leave this area as it stands for the
present, and to work it on the system sanctioned by the Resident for the unre-
served forests, which will be adverted to hereafter. The Katkali tract was found
on inspection to have been over-workod, and to contain little or no well-grovwn
tinber, wiilst the unreserved section of the Mailghat was much more in need of
being enlarged than the reserved portion, which already comprisod 400 square
miles, the area Dr. Brandis considered necessary to provide for the wants of the
greater part of the Poorna Valley.
Abandoninent of the Katkali Reserve,
5. The bazars at the foot of the hills for taxation of forest produce have algo
Raduction of Naka. been reduced; four bazars having had to be closed,
owing to the withdrawal of duty on forest produge
imported from the Central Provinces.
6. The only change that has taken place in South Berar consists in the
exclusion of Pathroat from the list of reserves, it
accordance with the orders of Lis Excelloucy the
Governor General of India in Council on the Forest Report for 1870-71.
