11. There is thus a reserved area of 400 square milés in the Northern Divi-
sion, and 246 square miles in the Southern Division;
the total area fur the province being 646 square
miles.
Arca of Reserves,
All these forests have been demarcated, except those of ‘* Paeen Gunga” and)
‘‘ Khelapoor.” The line round the former has, however, been partially cut ; and it
is hoped that the boundaries of both reserves may be poninleton: if not by the close
of the current working season, at least early next cold weather.
I shall now refer in detail to the progress that has been made during the year,
in demarcating each furest.
NORTHERN DIVISION.
12, The method of demarcation followed in Berar was given in Appendix to
the Report for 1870-71. Briefly, the demarcation
consists of acleared boundary path 40 feet'in breadth,
with a row of pillars erected in the centre, at distances of about a mile apart, or 89,
that they may be distinctly visible the one from the other. In the middle of each
pillar is fixed a stout teak post, capped with a whitewashed gurra or chatty, and con-
taining a serial number cut in tin.
System of Demarcation.
13. At the close of 1870-71, 35 miles of boun-
Byraghur Binks: Norests dary path had been cut, and 467 pillars erected.
The latter, however, included 237 pillars built on a portion of the line that
was afterwards altered. These consequently became uscless.
14, During the past season, 85 miles of boundary have been cleared, and 226
pillars erected at a cost of Rupees 1,075-8-3 inclusive
of price of tin numbers and gurrahs for the whole
reserve. The total number of pillars is therefore 456; and the length of cleared
boundary line 70 miles. In addition to the latter, there are 33 miles of natural
boundary, where no cutting was required, so that the total length of boundary line
is 103 miles. If the expenditure for 1870-71 be added to that for the past year, the
total cost of demarcating the Byraghur Reserve will amount to Rupees 1,569-6-3,
or a little over Rupees 15 per mile.
Progress of Demarcation.
SOUTHERN DIVISION.
15. This reserve is estimated to cover an area
of 75 square miles, bounded by a path 42 miles in
length, and containing 93 pillars.
Geroo Mattergaon.
During the past year, Mr. Morrow reports having cleared the path of all young
shoots, that had sprung up during the rainy season, and affixed whitewashed gur-
rahs, and tin numbers to the pillars, thus completing the demarcation according t
the prescribed system.
16. In last Report it was remarked that this reserve, the demarcation of
cre ee which had not yet been commenced, comprised an
; area Of about 25 square miles, but as it included a
large amount of cultivation, the tract would be revised, with « view to as much of
this being excluded, as was practicable without unduly sacrificing forest covered land.
17. This has accordingly been done, and by taking up a portion of the adjoin-
ing Jungle in the Akolah and Bassim Districts, it
has been found possible to exclude the greater part
of the cultivated aroa, and at the same time to increase the size of the reserve to
about 50 square miles. The additional forest contains some of the best teak to be
met with in the western portion of the Adjunta Range.
Alteration of Reserve.
