revenue of six months only, viz., from October 1870, when the nakahs were first
established, to the end of March; but as this is the period when the export in
timber is at its height, it may be mferted that the revenue has risen rather thao
fallen during the year. The decrease in the revenue of the northern nakahs and
the cause thereof have already been explained.

PART IL—GENERAL.
HEAD [.—FINANCIAL RESULTS.
115. The accompanying Statements show the financial results of the year
in detail, Compared with the previous year the total receipts and expenditure are :—
Receipt, Expenditure,
rs ee ae aes
Ra. Ae Fy Rs A. P.
1870-71.., ww. 1,77,279 3 3 ee 82,057 7 5
1871-72... .. 1,55,605 3 5 ae 1,00,446 10 4
116, Thus the gross revenue of the past year exhibits a decrease of Rupees
21,674 over that of 1871-72, whilst the net revenue has fallen by Rupees
40,063-2-11, It must be explained, however, that the expenditure side of
the past year’s accounts includes the extraordinary charge of Rupees 17,674-4-9
for the purchase of and repairs to two Forest Bungulows at Chickuldah, and
for the erection of a Bungalow at Bassim; wlnist the large sum of Rupees
°3,419-13-0 on account of grazing in the Akolah District has been omitted from
the receipts. This item was not credited to Government till the commence-
ment of April, and it will therefore require to be shown in the accounts of the
current year,
117. Had it not been for the ahove, there would have been an increase both
in the gross and net revenues, and this notwithstanding the large falling off in the
receipts of the Mailghit Forests, consequent on the stoppage of teak and tho
closing of four of the nakahs. There would, at the same time, have beon an
increase in expenditure of only Rupees 714-14-2, due to the promotion during the
year of Captain Douglas from 3rd to 2nd grade Deputy Conservator.
118. From Form No. 21 it will be seen, that the principal items in whioh an
increase of revenue has taken place are ‘* sale of
tinber brought to depéts by Government Agency,”
“ grazing dues,’ and ‘ miscellaneous reveipts;”
whilst those in which there has been a decrease are “ duty on foreign timber,”
od } dj 66 1 : 5 my 7? : rT
permit fees,” and sale of “ minor’ forest produce.” The increase mm “ sale of
timber” is owing to the thinning operations carried on at Pyh—the gncrease in
[tema in which the Revenue has in-
creased and decreased.
