Cinchona Department for trial in Sikkim. We may thereforo look forward
with interest to the result of these operations in a few ycars.
CHITTAGONG.
56. In this division a small plantation was tried on the plan of cul-
tivators planting Teak with their crops. After-much talk they were induced
to try, and they carried By 25 scers of sced to plant; but the results
were very trifling, as only 290 plants are now living. The Assistant Conservator
reports the plants as being 2 fect in height and very healthy. Besides this, a
small nursery was formed by daily labor at Sectapahar on the Kurnafoolee river.
There the sceds came up most profusely, but he only succeeded in planting out
250 plants, leaving 400 to 500 in the nursery. These plants are also all very
healthy, and average 2 feet in height.
o7. During the past cold weather two more nurseries to hold about 5,000
seedlings have been prepared at Seetapahar, as also
8 acres of land cleared and prepared for planting
these out and sowing secds i situ, obtained from Burmah. The results will be
communicated in next report.
58. It has been before remarked that the Kurnafoolee river is peculiarly
favorable for timber floating operations; and as the
hosting ne Mer favorable for umber Hort is a good one for shipping timber, probably
Chittagong would prove a favorable division for
New nurseries this season,
extending plantations.
58. Expenditure under plantations in this divi-
sion amounted to Rs. 235.
59. It may be well to add here, while on the subject of plantations, that
there has been some correspondence with the Irn-
gation Department, Public Works, regarding plan-
tations along the sides of canals, and that the Superintending Engineers of the
Soane and Orissa circles have applied for seeds of Sissoo and Toon. In anti-
cipation of thesco demands by the Irrigation Department, supplies of sceds of
Sissoo, Toon, and Tcak, were collected, and have been forwarded; but it is
feared that the planting will be rather late this season.
60. In next report the expenditure will be under separate heads of work,
in detail, so as to give clear information of cost of
givens ture details of coat of work tobe each kind of work on each plantation and arrive at
) a clear rate per acre. On small experimental plan-
tations such detail would only mndufendl as they are necessarily much more
expensive than extended plantations with regular labour in them, and the expendi-
ture on each work cannot be casily stated.

61. In this division operations were limited, like the previous year, to
bringing to depdts timber felled during former
Timbor operations. years. Details of the work done will be found in
statement No. 27.
62. Besides those operations, an agreement wus entcred into with un
European to bring down timber from the outer hills, where it had been felled
in 1866-67, and where it was subject to being burnt or lost through land-slips
and other causes. The timber was to be paid for at the rate of 9 annas per
cubic foot, and advances, not to exceed a total of 10 annas per cubic foot, were
to be made to the purchaser in instalments at certain specified places for bring-
ing the timber to sale depdts, where it was to remain the property of Govern-
ment and not to be removed until the advances were recovered and the value
