38. If you should consider it advisable to work Sarunda this cold season, I am of
opinion that an officer should be detailed to Sarunda as early as possible, as he will find it
no easy work to be in a position to forward timber by this route during next rains in such
an out-of-the-way and thinly peopled a district.

Extract from Annual Report, 1870-71, of Assistant Conservator of Bhaugulpore Divsston.
Para. 7.—From Udsu I came by river to Garjan on the Brahmini easily in the month
of March, and am confident that there would be no impedi-
ment to rafting timber immediately after the rains as far as
Bonai, some 25 miles below Garjan, when it might be taken down the Brahmini later on;
as the Commissioner of Chota Nagpore told me that large sized boats navigate this river
from the mouth to this point at all seasons,
8. The portion of the Koel over which I went is easy of navigation for dingies, and
excellent for rafting purposes; nothing could be better. And from the boatmen on the river
1 got information that boats can, and do, come down the river from above “ (mko or Somij,”
a village on the opposite bank, to where the Karo joins the Koel, and that the Karo ass
was navigable.
