9but, if the suggestion concerning the origin of this name

10advanced by General Cunningham were true, it would he

11highly improbable that half the name should have become

12attached to the plain north-east of Attock, and the other half

13tothe plain round Haripur. The reason why the people got

14into the habit of sae iy See two names Chach and Hazar&

15heiag is that under the Dourani rule both tracts were governed

16rom Attock.

17Major Wace is inclined to suggest a more modern origin of

18the name Hazéré. We know from the Emperor Jihangir’s diary.

19that the Kérlaghs or Kérluki Hagfrés came to India with

20Timarlane at the end of the 14th century, and that on his return

21to Central Asia they located themselves in this part of the country.

22General Cunningham himself tells us* that in the time of Babur,

23t.e., in the first half of the fifteenth century, the Kérluki Hazdras

24ruled a considerable territory in this part of the Punjab, though by

25some mistake he speaks of them as if they were a branch of the

26Janjuba and Awén tribe, instead of Turks, as we know them

27to have been. Inasmuch as we know that the last of these Kérlagh

28or Karluki Hazéré families retained an important position in

29the district up to the ond of the seventeenth century (sec below),

30it seems most probable that they gave to the district its present

31name, just as another branch of the Hazdéré Turks have given

32their name to a large tract in Afghénistén. In a number of

33old deeds filed during the recent settlement by Turfns, Gujars,

34and Gakkhars, the dates of which extend from the your 1650 a.p.

35to 1805 a.p., the district is spoken of as Hazéré Karlak. It

36scems only natural that in later years the latter half of this name

37should be dropped and almost forgotten.

38Gesasined! references to Hazara are to be found in the “ Ayin

39Akbari” (a.p. 1597), the “ Tarikh Farishta ” (a.p. 1605), “ Tuzak

40Jehangiri” (a.p. 1604—1626), the “ Khulast-ul-Tawérikh ” (a.p.

411695), and the “ Sair-ul-Mutdékherin ” (a.p. 1771).f From the

42statements made in these books, it appears that under the Moghal

43Empire the Hazaré plain was a i to the Attock Cover-

44norship ; that the Khanpur ilaéa, the Dhand and Karral country,

45including the Rajoia ildka, were part of the Gakkhar chietship,

46and included in the tract known as Fatehpur Babari (Rawalpindi) ;

47and that the Tanawal, Dhamtaur, and Sw&thi country were

48known as Sarkdér Pakhli, and formed a part of the Rashmfr

49province. A family of Turks are described in the Tuzak Jehan-

50giri as the zamtndirs of the Pakhli Sarkar; the Emporor

51Jch4ngir writes that they call themselves Karlaghs, and say

52that they came to India with Timarlane (A.D. 1399), and were

53left by him or located themselves in Pakhli on his return to

54Central Asia.

55The Gakkhars are vory ancient occupants of this portion of

56the Panjéb, where they held their own, as described in the

57* Bee page 19 of the “ Archwological Survey Reports.,” Vol. If.
