the Queen, was held by Sir Herbert Edwardes, the Commissioner of Amballa, who

convicted the accused, and sentenced three of them to esufferdeath, and the

remaining eight to be transported for life. Five ofthe accused were residents

of the Amballa District; five of them were residents of Patna; and the eleventh,

of the Rajsye District in Bengal. The Treason was hatched 40 years ago at Pat-

na, by Syad Ahmed the founder of the Wahabee sect in India, whose intolerent

doctrines are sedulously inculcated over the whole breadth of upper India, from

the Brahmuputra to the Indus. It was proved that the accused in this case

had in various degrees been the agents for the collection and transmission of men

and money through Patna, Thaneysur, and Amballa, to the Queen’s enemies,

the Hindostanee fanatics, at Mulkah and Sitiana, both before and during the time

of the recent military operations at Ambeyla; but the alternative punishment of

transportation for life with forfeiture of all property, was deemed more just and

appropriate in the present instance, and the sentences of death were accordingly

commuted by this Court.
