5 I.—Delegation of functions with respect to suits agdinst Chiefs.—By Notification
6 No. 1869-I., dated the 29th March, 1889, the Local Government of the Panjab and its Secre-
7 taries have been authorised, under section 433, sub-section (4), of the Code of Civil Procedure,
8 to exercise, in respect of the Chiefs of these States, the functions assigned by sub-sections (2),
9 (2) and (8) of that section to the Governor General in Council and a Secretary to the Govern-
10 ment of India, respectively. (See Gazette of Indta, 1889, Part 1, page 167.)
11 II.— Railway lands.—Jurisdiction over the lands in the Kapurthala State, oceupied by
12 the Sindh, Panjab and Delhi section of the North Western Railway, has been acyuired by the
13 British Government. (See Chapter VI of this Part, sa/ra, page 100.)
14 IlJ.—Chamba Forests.—By an agreement entered into with the Raja of Chamba in
15 1864, as to the lease of the Chamba Forests (see Aitchison’s Treaties, Vol. V1, No. LXXXjI),
16 it was agreed (Article 10) that the Conservator should be authorised to exercise within tlre
17 Chamba territory the powers of a Subordinate Magistrate of the 1st class, as described in Act
18 XXV of 1861,(') for the trial of offences against property, offences relating to property-marks,
19 mischief, assaults, and contravention of such forest rules as might from time to time be in
20 force in the territories under the Government of the Panjab, and (Article 11) that the Raja
21 should render every aid required by the Conservator in the exercise of the above powers for
22 apprehending offenders or supposed offenders, and for enforcing the penalties awarded by him.
23 IvV.—Kapurthala Jaghir in Baree Doab and Estates in Oudh.—The British Govern-
24 ment exercises Civil and Police jurisdiction im the hereditary Jaghir of the Réjé of Kapurthala
25 in the Baree Doab (see Aitchison’s ‘Treaties, Vol. V1, page 138). The R4jé has also certain
26 estates in Oudh, in regard to which see Part V, Note V, supra, page 665.
