2« [nassessed.”? But this includes cultivated and culturable land,

3assigned to Jagheerdars, which is not, strictly speaking, unassessed.

4It is for the most part assessed just like Khalsa land, but the

5assessment goes to the assigns of Government instead of direct

6to the Government itself.

757. The areaof barren Jand under the head of Lakhiraj, as will

8be seen from column 5 of the explanatory memo., is ),824,363

11ever, are included Rukh lands, of which about 34 millions of acres

12are culturable, but not at present cultivated.

1358. Of the total area of 65 millions of acres in the Province

25Department for 1867-68, in’ the form (1. E) prescribed by the

26Calcutta Statistical Committee, the cultivated area of the Province

3295,769 The two together wonld give very nearly the

337,087 total area of the Province, as represented in the

34102,806 Census Statements.

3562. But the correct explanation of the difference is more

36probably that given in para, 31 regarding the increase of area over

37former Census, that is, that the Kangra District now includes a

38large Jagheer area ( between 5 and 6,000 square miles) which was

39not formerly included.

4063. There is also a slight difference in the average rates for the

41Province, which is sufficiently accounted for by the above difference

42in area.

49pare ox District with another, it will, as regards average assessment

50per agre of cultivation, be sufficient for all practical purposes to

51examine the rates on the area paying Revenue to Government, as
