7 Having lost all his family, and being separated
8 from his people, the Gooroo became tired of life.
9 One day he addressed the young Pathan thus,
10 “ I am the murderer of your father, and if you do
11 not avenge his death, you are a rascal and coward.”
12 The lad, however, respected Govind, and resolved
13 to make his escape.
14 It happened that Govind and the young Pathan
15 were one day playing chess together, and the
16 Gooroo began taunting his adversary as usual,
17 until at length the lad grew enraged, and drawing
18 a dagger, plunged it into Govind Singh.
19 The wound was a small one, but a portion oi
20 Govind’s entrails escaped through it. People ran
21 in all directions in pursuit o! the murderer, tor the
22 purpose of killing him; but this Govind strictly
23 forbade, and added, “ the man was only avenging
24 an injury; it was by my own advice that he com¬
25 mitted the deed which has removed his father’s
26 blood from my hands. Permit him, therefore, to go
27 where he pleases.”
28 The wound w'as sewed up, and to all appeal ance,
29 healing, but Govind was determined to die. He
30 called for a strong bow, which he bent with all bis
31 force, and in doing so the stitches of bis wound gave
32 way, bis bowels again protruded, and he died
33 almost immediately.
34 This event occurred in the year of the llijera
35 1132, Sawun 1765, and a.o. 1708, at the city of
36 Nadsbur, in the reign of Buhadoor Shah.
