5 requesting to know with what part of the body he
6 should commence. Nanuk replied, With the
7 feet.” Lelma having opened the coffin, began to
8 eat, when the corpse suddenly disappeared. On
9 seeing with what readiness Lehna had obeyed his
10 command, Nanuk embraced him, and from that
11 time called him Ungut, or “own body.” This is
12 considered a miracle by the Sikhs, who believe that
13 the body of Nanuk passed into that of Lehna. He
14 was thenceforth appointed by Nanuk to succeed Loho"
15 On Ungut being appointed successor to Nanuk,
16 the two sons of the latter, Luchmee Doss and
17 Sree Chund, became liis dire enemies, and said
18 their father had been guilty of tyranny in thus de¬
19 priving them of the Goorooship, and conferring it
20 ou a servant. They loaded Ungut, who was at the
21 time in a very sickly condition, with abuse. On
22 hearing of the conduct of his sons to his faithful
23 follower, Nanuk was annoyed, and vowed that
24 neither of them should ever succeed him, so long
25 as Ungut or any of his descendants remained. He
26 sent for Ungut, and passed his hands over his body,
27 which was immediately restored to health, with
28 the exception of his feet, which Nanuk, of course,
29 die; not touch. Ungut's feet- remained therefore Afflicted with
30 afflicted with a severe complaint, and day and piafn|t1

32 affliction, Ungut separated himself from the sons of
