11 splendour unknown to Ms predecessors. He kept
12 tine horses, and was clothed in costly raiments.
13 Before the time of Uijun, the Gooroos were
14 clothed like fukeers, or beggars.
15 . Tow'ards the latter part of his reign he removed
16 to Umritsir from Govmdwal, and dwelt there. At
17 Umritsir he constructed a large tank, and fixed on
18 i t as his place of residence; it. was wamedHurmtimder,
19 or God’s house. The Grunth, or Holy Book, which
20 had been begun and continued by his predecessors,
21 was placed in the temple erected in the tank, and
22 crowds frequented it for the purpose of bathing
23 and hearing the Grunth read. The Chukkur Ram
24 Hass was thus enlarged, and when the wealth of
25 Uijun began to increase in horses, elephants, &cv,
26 his brothers began to envy him.
27 On this occasion, Uijun built another tank, at
28 the distance of seven miles from Umritsir, nam¬
29 ing it Turmtara, which means " cleansing water.”
30 Between Uijun and his brothers there was perpetual
31 enmity.
32 Uijun remained long without issue, and on this
33 account was much troubled and distressed in mind.
34 He lamented his hard fate day and night. At last,
35 the people advised him to go and consult Boodha,
36 who was still alive, though a contemporary of
37 Nanuk. It was at the suggestion and by the
38 advice of this old man, that Uijun had constructed
39 the tank at Umritsir. Uijun, therefore, resolved
40 to visit Boodha, taking all his effects along with
