12 them at Delhi, near that of Hurkeshesis.
13 Whdn Teghbuhadur’s head arrived at Mukho-
14 wal, Govind Kao shed tears over it, and having
15 burned it, he erected a tomb over the ashes , ^fter
16 performing the funeral rites to the memory of his
17 father, Govind Rao determined on reforming the
18 religion and manners of the Sikhs.
19 One day Govind inquired of a Brahmin well
20 versed in history and other branches of knowledge,
21 what the meaning of the saying was, that " One
22 arrow might become many, and one man might kill
23 a hundred.” The Brahmin replied, " In such
24 cases the Gods are present.’’ Govind asked how
25 he could secure their aid. The Brahmin replied,
26 that besides Benares, he could obtain this know¬
27 ledge from no other place. On hearing this,
28 Govind selected a careful, steady man, whom be
29 despatched to Kashi (Benares.) When lie reached
30 that place, he made enquiries regarding the Brah¬
31 mins who could give the knowledge his master
32 wanted; and after obtaining the proper person, he
33 brought him with him to Govincl Rao. Govind
34 promised the Brahmin much wealth and riches for
35 the knowledge he required, and the latter agreed to
36 the terms, which were ratified by the burning of
37 ghee.* Govind built a house for the Brahmin,
38 near Mukhowal, and everything required by him
