from among his followers, and performed, the pa-
hoolclee.* He first mixed the sherbet with his
sword, then blew or breathed on the latter. He
put a little of the sherbet five times on the head.,,
and sprinkled it on the eyes. Each of the ten men
then drank five handfulls of the sherbet, and called
out; in a loud voice, " Wah Gooroo jee ke FultehT
The oath was then administered, and the men
agreed to renounce the following tenets:—
I. The Brahminical String.
II. Kur-muas, or a belief in the transmigration of
souls.
III. Keelnas, or distinction of castes,,
IV. Kelrtas, or division into trades.
The first of these was the most important point
to be gained. Unless this was agreed to, Govind
knew that his followers would soon be reclaimed by
the Brahmins.
The second, or Kurmtm , is a doctrine in which
Manuk had faith ; but Govind wished to remove it
from the minds of his followers, as a belief in it
would tend to make them less sanguinary than he
Considered desirable.
The third, or Keelnas, enjoins a strict alliance
with one’s family and friends of the same caste. By
renouncing this, the Sikhs threw off all distinction
of caste, and left home and relations.
The Kehuu enjoined the division of the people
