4 THE WARLIKE EXPLOITS OF GOVIND SINGH.
5 After initiating his followers into the pahooldee,
6 Govind determined, on a religious warfare; and in
7 order to excite them to action, he threw the
8 greater part of his wealth into the Sutlej.
9 One day* a Sikh arrived from Scinde, bringing Oovind’s
10 with him a couple of handsome bracelets, worth wealth!* 1 for
11 50,000 rupees, or £5,000 sterling, for the Gooroo,
12 and requested permission to fasten them on his
13 wrists. Govind Singh, at, first, refused ; but the
14 man continuing to urge his request, he at length
15 complied. The Gooroo then went immediately to
16 the river, and threw one of the bracelets into the
17 water : the Sikh inquired what had become of it;
18 and Govind said it had fallen into the river. On
19 hearing this, the man procured a diver, and offered
20 him 500 rupees if he would bring it up; the diver
21 agreed, provided the place could be pointed out.
22 On referring to Govind on this point, the Gooroo
23 took off" the other bracelet and threw it into the
