17 Govind Singh ordered the tent to be pitched, and
18 the howdah placed on the elephant, while the horse
19 was saddled and bridled.
20 On seeing these, the rajahs wished much to
21 possess them.
22 The elephant and tent "were coveted by Bheem
23 (found, the Rajah ofPhulore; while Hurree Chund,
24 the Rajah of Hind bur, wished for the horse, sword,
25 and hawk. The latter rajah seized the sword, but
26 Govind remarked, “ My follower has brought these
27 things for me, and you can easily have them on my
28 terms ; which are that I first sit in the howdah with
29 the hawk in my hand, the sword girded on my side,
30 and the horse led before me. I shall afterwards sit
31 in the tent.”
32 Govind in proposing these terms knew well, that
33 the rajahs would either forego the articles altogether,
34 or be annoyed at the conditions; in either case,
35 he was prepared to act, and added, “If you want
36 the tent, elephant, horse, sword and hawkj you are
37 welcome to them after l have thus used them.’*
