7 •Sambucus abkata & S. Emm;s (Dwarf-elder) are found
8 growing in the Himalayas as well as in Cashmere. The roots of
9 the latter, it is said, have purgative properties, and are used in
10 dropsy, as also the berries. Common Eider possesses in its
11 different parts \arious properties. To the fresh dowers polong
12 resolvent and purgative effects; the dried dowers, however, act
13 merely on the cutaneous system and the urinary organs (one
14 being in connection with the other); consequently, they are
15 used in catarrhal and rheumatic affections, as in Coryza, sore-
16 throat, eruptive diseases, etc. The berries are considered aperient
17 and sudorific. The seeds are laxative. The leaves and exterior
18 bark* however, are regarded as most powerful, producing, in full
19 doses, vomiting and purging. The inner hark is recommended
20 as a deobstruent, and hydragogue purgative in dropsy and
21 various chronic, affections. A singular fungus is sometimes
22 found growing on the trunk of the common elder,.railed Judas’-
23 ear (Emdia auricula Judes) from its resemblance to the human
24 ear. It was once used medicinally us an astringent, and em¬
25 ployed in infusion or decoction; also in the form of a lotion in
26 ophthalmia, and as a gargle' in sore-throats accompanied with
27 relaxation. (The British Flora Medico.) Such a medicine,
28 cheap ami procurable everywhere in England, as abo throughout
29 Europe, should he investigated, and more generally used.

32 in diarrhoea; it i*, however, much used at Lahore, as In Europe,
