5 “The Sikh army recently marched from Lahore
6 towards the British frontier, as it was alleged by
7 the orders of the Durbar, for the purpose of in-
8 vading the British territory.
9 “The Governor-General’s agent, by direction
10 of the Governor-General, demanded an expla-
11 nation of this movement, and no reply being
12 returned within a reasonable time, the demand
13 was repeated. The Governor-General, unwilling
14 to believe in the hostile intentions of the Sikh
15 Government, to which no provocation had been
16 given, refrained from taking any measures which
17 might have a tendency to embarrass the Govern-
18 ment of the Maharajah, or to induce collision
19 between the two States.
20 “When no reply was given to the repeated
21 demand for explanation, and while active mili-
22 tary preparations were continued at Lahore,
23 the Governor-General considered it necessary to
24 order the advance of troops towards the frontier
25 to reinforce the frontier posts.
26 “ The Sikh army has now, without a shadow of
27 provocation, invaded the British territories.
28 “The Governor-General must, therefore, take
29 measures for effectually protecting the British
30 provinces, for vindicating the authority of the
