3 lators of treaties, and the disturbers of public
4 peace.
5 “The Governor-General hereby declares the
6 possessions of Maharajah Dhuleep Singh on the
7 left or British banks of the Sutlege confiscated
8 and annexed to the British territories.
9 “The Governor-General wlll respect the ex-
10 isting rights of all Jagheerdars, Zemindars, and
11 tenants in the said possessions, who, by the
12 course they now pursue, evince their fidelity to
13 the British Government. 7
14 “The Governor-General hereby calls upon all
15 the chiefs and sirdars in the protected territories
16 to co-operate cordially with the British Govern-
17 ment for the punishment of the common enemy,
18 and for the maintenance of order in these states.
19 Those of the chiefs who show alacrity and fidelity
20 in the discharge of this duty which they owe to
21 the protecting power, will find their interests
22 promoted thereby, and those who take a contrary
23 course will be treated as enemies to the British
24 Government, and will be punished accordingly.
25 “The inhabitants of all the territories on the
26 left bank of the Sutlege are hereby directed to
27 abide peaceably in their respective villages, where
28 they will receive efficient protection by the British
