2 the camp of the latter, who however escaped to that of the
3 Gorechars, some twenty-eight thousand men, who for the
4 time protected him, but by whose advice he during the night
5 quitted their camp, and with only seven horsemen went
6 off towards the south. Thence having disguised themselves
7 they turned towards Lahore, but lingered in the neigh-
8 bourhood of that city for some days before they ventured
9 to enter it.
10 Peace and quiet were now restored among the Khalsa troops,
11 but they long remembered with remorse the death of their
12 revered teacher ; and the men of General Court's battalion
13 as being more particularly concerned in his murder, were
14 thenceforward termed Gooroomars, or slayers of the Gooroo,
15 and it was some time before any of their comrades would
16 cat or drink with them.
17 Soon after this event of the death of Baba Beer Sing, Cash-
18 meera Sing-, and Uttur Sing Scindawalla, a great show of enemity
19 was made betwixt Rajah Heera Sing and his uncle Goolaub
20 Sing. Those well informed on the subject believe that though some
21 slight misunderstanding may have existed in respect to money
22 matters, — Goolaub Sing claiming the property of Dehan Sing
23 and Suchet Sing, his brothers, and even keeping his hold of
24 some of that entrusted to his care by his nephew — the display of
25 hostility originated in that crooked policy for which the Dogra
26 chiefs were notorious, and was merely intended as a blind to the
27 world at large. However Heera Sing now publicly announced
28 that he had for many months past in vain tried peaceful mea-
29 sures to bring his uncle to a quiet and amicable settlement
30 of their differences. He, therefore, summoned a General
31 Council of the army and requested its advice as to what
32 was to be done to bring his uncle to terms, and its aid in
33 carrying the measures determined on into effect. What he
34 required from Goolaub Sing was — 1. An increase of one-fourth
