4 Punjanb.] 2. The restoration of all the lands, jaghires,
5 and other property of Rajah Suchet Sing. 3. The restora-
6 tion of all the property of the late Rajah Dehan Sing ; and
7 4. The presence of Rajah Goolaub Sing at Lahore. To
8 enforce these demands, twenty battalions of infantry, with
9 a due proportion of cavalry and artillery were despatched
10 towards Jumrnoo. But so slowly were they sent that the
11 Seiks soon saw that affairs were as yet very irresolutely carried
12 on, and they soon began to harbour a suspicion that some foul
13 play was intended. This belief was strengthened by a reflec-
14 tion on the fact that the troops were sent forward by different
15 routes, and separated into small detachments ; while news came
16 in which told that Goolaub Sing with not less than thirty or
17 thirty-five thousand men was strongly encamped and ready
18 either to give or receive battle. Moreover it was known that
19 he had the power to raise in rebellion all the people of the
20 Baar, or low jungle country, and of all that to the west-
21 ward of the Jhelum as far as Attock ; and it was also known
22 that he was in close communication with Sirdar Teja Sing,
23 Governor of Peshawur, and with Dost Mahomed of Cabul.
24 He had likewise about this time procured the liberation of
25 Zubburdust Khan, a refractory chief, from prison in Cashmere,
26 where his influence was notoriously greater than that of the
27 Lahore Durbar. Affairs stood thus when, on account of the
28 suspicions of the troops, it was deemed inadvisable to move
29 any further in the matter. The Khalsa was therefore ordered
30 to halt and remain stationary where they were, scattered over
31 the country in small detachments and not very far from Lahore.
32 At the same time Bii Ram Sing, Dewan Denanauth, Shaik
33 Imam-ood-deen (son of the Governor of Cashmere) and others
34 were sent to Jummoo to endeavour by negotiation to bring
35 the misunderstanding to a peaceable termination. To this
