Runjeet Singh,‘ the late Maharaja of the Punjab, was believed
to have accumulated ten millions sterling of treasure and move-
able propetty.® This has been by native report exaggerated to
thirty millions.
The military § force was, in 1832, thus estimated :—

In 1836, Runjeet himself stated to Von Hiigel” that his forces
consisted of infantry, 27,000, of whom 15,000 were clad in
armour; cavalry, 27,000; elephants, 100. Burnes states the
army at 75,000, of whom 25,0008 were regular infantry, 5,000
regular cavalry and artillery; and these being drilled in the
European mode, were considered by this writer “fully equal to
the troops of the Indian army.” The artillery, according to the
same authority, comprised a hundred and fifty guns. On occa-
sion, however, of the interview which took place in 1838, at
Ferozpoor, between the British Governor-General (Lord Auck-
land) and the Maharaja, it was remarked of the Sikh army,°
* An enormous and almost incredible amount for a population of 200,000 ;
but the ill-fated district is fast sinking into utter destitution and depopu-
lation.
