8 Beta Beate, RUNNIE-KA-KOTE, in Sinde, a large fort near the town
9 Beng. 1840, p.912, Of Sunn, and about four miles west of the right or west bank of
10 the Indus. It cost a sum exceeding 100,000/., but it has never
11 been occupied, as it has no regular supply of water, this all-impor-
12 tant point having never, until after the completion of the structure,
13 entered into the thoughts of the Ameers of Sinde, under whose
14 orders the work was executed.* It is built of stone and lime-
15 mortar, in the form of an irregular pentagon, and can contain
16 two thousand men. A torrent from the Lukkee mountains, on
17 the declivity of which it is situated, flows by it during heavy

21 Gerard (J.G.), Very elevated and barren plain, or extensive valley, bearing a
22 oo pit vane?» scanty vegetation of grass and stunted furze; subjected, even in
23 xvill, 24, 258. the height of summer, to frost and snow, and being swept over by
24 the most impetuous whirlwinds. Its mean elevation is 16,000
25 feet. The climate is characterized by great aridity, and from this
26 cause, and the intense cold, is peculiarly suited to the constitu-
27 tion of the yak and shawl-goat, which thrive here, notwithstand-
28 ing the scantiness of pasture. Lat. 33° 20’, long. 77° 40’.
29 Burnes (James), RUREE, a town of Sinde on the route from Lucput, in
30 sonst Sin’®s Cutch, to Hyderabad, and on the edge of the desert. During the
31 swell it is watered by a branch of the Indus, but suffers much
32 from want of water at ather times. There is here a magnificent
33 mosque of great size and height. The town was formerly much
34 ‘ more considerable than at present ; its population is now scarcely
35 1,000. Near the town is a tank of good water. Lat. 24° 22’,
