3 SAADAT,! in Western Afghanistan, a fort on the route from
4 Kandahar to Herat, and ninety-five miles north-west of the former
5 place. It was built by the celebrated but ill-fated Futteh Khan,
6 as a residence for his mother, who maintained a petty court here,
7 and was ‘‘ renowned,” says Conolly,? “for courage and good-
8 ness.” The fort is strong and well constructed, being surrounded
9 by a dry ditch, formidable from its section and the very hard
10 granite in which it is excavated. The form of the fort is oblong ;
11 it is a hundred and eighty yards in length, forty in width; with
12 round towers at the angles and sides. The entire space inclosed
13 by the ditch is three hundred yards long and two hundred wide,
14 the ground between the ditch and the walls being intended to pro-
15 tect cattle froman enemy. The supply of water is abundant, from
16 subterraneous aqueducts, and in the vicinity is considerable cul-

18 SADAN, in Sinde, a village near the right or western bank
19 of the Indus. It is situate in a wooded country, at the eastern
20 base of the extension of the Lukkee hills to the south. Fora
21 dozen miles south of the village the country is occupied by an
22 extensive Sikargah or hunting preserve, formerly belonging to
23 one of the Ameers of Hyderabad. Lat. 24° 56’, long. 68° 10’.
