5 marched through it; and on the arrival of the force there,

8 was retained by a regiment of native infantry cantoned in an en-
9 2 Alien, 118. trenched camp near the town.® In the beginning of March
10 1842, General England, marching from Dadur to reinforce the
11 garri$on of Kandahar, made Shawl his head-quarters, and fell
12 back on it when repulsed at Hykulzye, in the close of the month,
13 9 Mil. Op.in Afg. in his advance towards the Kojuk Pass.2 A month after this
14 aie reverse, General England marched from Shawl, and with little
15 difficulty forced his way to Kandahar: in the close of the follow-
16 ing August he returned to it, having succeeded without loss in
17 withdrawing over the Kojuk Pass thirteen pieces of artillery, and
18 an enormous amount of baggage, conveyed by between nine and
19 1 Id. 373, ten thousand beasts of burthen.! On the Ist of October,? 1842,
20 ane the British force totally and finally evacuated Quetta, and
21 marched through the Bolan Pass to Sinde. Shawl has been
22 3 Jour. As. Soc. ascertained, by barometrical measurement, to be 5,563 feet® above

25 TELL. Ms. Doce; SHAWL,! in Beloochistan, an elevated valley or table-land,
26 en ie. bounded on the east by the Kurklekkee mountains overhanging
27 the Bolan Pass, and on the west by the heights connected with
28 Chehel Tan; on the north it has the Tukatoo mountains; on
29 the south it ascends, with a very gentle acclivity, towards Mus-
30 toong and Kelat. Limits substantially the same with these are
31 2 Kalat, $12, assigned to it by Masson : 2 To the north, Shawl extends to
32 the Khaka district of Toba; to the south it joins the district of
33 Mastung and the plain called Dasht Bedowlat; to the east it has
34 the Khaka district of Hanna; to the west, Peshing and Sherrud,
35 belonging to Afghan tribes.” According to this writer, the
36 valley of Shawl is twelve miles in length, with an average
37 breadth of three or four miles. It lies between lat. 30° 2’—-30°
38 14’, long. 66° 55'—67°. The drainage of the few scanty streams
39 which water it is effected through an opening in the heights
